Hypothesis Driven OCT Basic and Clinical Science: Example of PS-OCT.

Hypothesis driven basic and clinical research is desperately needed in OCT research. The basic is primarily dealt with here with the clinical science addressed in another talk. Many in vivo imaging conclusions are based on one small histopathology study or worse assumptions with no histologic correlate. Is there adequate validation to say OCT measures macrophages, microvessels, healing, or even necrotic cores reliably? What is the value of patient studies which retrospectively analyze patient data bases? This video uses PS-OCT as an example where extensive hypothesis driven research was done, strongly supporting image interpretation. This is also how we developed OCT for imaging in non-transparent tissue, which is dealt with in another talk. As we are finally starting to see double blind clinical trials with OCT in cardiology after 20 years, hypothesis driven in vitro and in vivo research is needed, particularly for image interpretation.
